Portland Helmich

Portland Helmich is a professional TV host, producer, writer, and voiceover talent who covers many beats, but she's especially dedicated to increasing the public's awareness of natural and alternative forms of healing and the way they can not only address illness but enhance well-being, as well. She's the creator, host, and showrunner/executive producer of What's the Alternative?, a 52-episode national talk show about healing and wellness that was broadcast on the former Veria Living TV. She's investigated alternative healing methods for HealthWeek and Healing Quest on PBS, for the ABC News affiliate WCVB-TV, for New Morning on the Hallmark Channel, and for Oxygen, where she was an alternative medicine correspondent. She's also done health reporting for The American Consumer on PBS and has appeared on WGBH's Greater Boston as an alternative medicine contributor. She's written for Body & Soul and Alternative Medicine magazines and is the creator, host, and producer of Kripalu Perspectives, a series of podcast interviews with leaders in the natural health world who teach at the renowned Kripalu Center for Yoga & Health in Stockbridge, Massachusetts. She currently writes for Kripalu and produced and hosted a YouTube series called Headlines, Health & Healing.

Health and wellness are not her only focus, however. Portland was the host and one of the co-producers and co-writers of Earwolf's acclaimed podcast, Stranglers, which explored the highly complex Boston Strangler murder case that consumed the Boston Police Department and terrified the city of Boston in the early to mid 1960s. GQ Magazine listed Stranglers first on its list of the top seven podcasts of 2016, while The Atlantic listed it seventh on their list of the top 50 podcasts of 2016: https://theslanted.com/2016/11/25165/earwolf-stranglers-podcast-boston-strangler/

Most recently, Portland hosted the New York City television talk show, To Your Health, on Net TV. She's also hosted segments for a Comcast home improvement series and hosted Nitebeat, a live evening Comcast Network talk show covering all topics. She once hosted a job recruitment series that aired on New England Cable News and a magazine travel show that aired on Discovery Home & Leisure. As a producer and writer, Portland has worked on programs airing Animal Planet, the Sundance Channel, PBS, Lifetime Real Women, the Hallmark Channel, the Travel Channel, the History Channel, Destination America, Oxygen, Veria Living TV, Wisdom Television, WCVB-TV, New England Cable News, and more. She's done corporate producing for health-oriented companies like Edwards Lifesciences. And as a media coach, she's enhanced the public speaking skills of authors and various professionals preparing for television interviews and public presentations. Finally, she's lent her voiceover skills to documentary films, corporate narration, and commercials for 20 years now. From 2002 to 2005, she was heard on WGBH Radio, where she read the news during NPR programs like Morning Edition, All Things Considered, and Marketplace.

Portland began her career as an actress, studying at Circle-in-the-Square Theatre School at New York University. She's performed on stage and in commercials, films, and corporate videos. She's acted in films like HBO's The Wizard of Lies and on the HBO series, The Newsroom, as well as on soap operas like All My Children. She holds a BFA in Acting from New York University and an MA from St. Michael's College in Vermont. To contact Portland Helmich, please click here.
